There’s something undeniably magical about eloping amidst the raw beauty of the Columbia River Gorge. With its cascading waterfalls, lush greenery, and misty mountain vibes, this stunning Pacific Northwest destination sets the perfect stage for an intimate celebration of love. Recently, I had the privilege of capturing a stunning elopement at Horsetail Falls with Autumn & Garrett, blending the timeless artistry of film photography with the crisp detail of digital shots. It was a day filled with romance, adventure, and breathtaking scenery, and I’m thrilled to share the story with you!
Why the Columbia River Gorge is Perfect for an Elopement
The Columbia River Gorge is a treasure trove of natural beauty. Whether you’re planning a simple ceremony by a serene waterfall or a rugged hike to a secluded spot, this area offers endless options for adventurous couples. The Gorge’s iconic waterfalls, including Multnomah Falls, Horsetail Falls, Latourell Falls, and many more that provide dramatic backdrops that look straight out of a fairytale. For this couple, the choice of Horsetail Falls was perfect—its secluded charm and towering cascade created an intimate and awe-inspiring atmosphere.
The Day Unfolded: A Perfect Blend of Adventure and Romance
The day began with a quiet morning as Autumn & Garrett prepared at a charming nearby Airbnb. The bride’s simple pink satin gown and the groom’s white button down and jeans complemented the natural surroundings beautifully. We arrived at the waterfall just as the soft morning light filtered through the trees, creating a dreamy glow.
As Autumn & Garrett exchanged vows surrounded by the sound of rushing water and rustling leaves, it was clear that this wasn’t just a elopement—it was a profound celebration of their connection. Every moment felt both serene and exhilarating, a reminder of how special elopements can be.
Alternative Elopement Attire
One of the many joys of eloping is the freedom to forgo traditional wedding attire and wear something that truly reflects your style and comfort. Whether it’s a flowy gown, a tailored suit, or something completely unconventional like Autumn’s simple pink satin gown and Garrett’s white button down with jeans, the choice is entirely yours. Elopements allow couples to prioritize feeling good and being themselves, which creates a uniquely authentic experience. Forget the rules and embrace what makes you feel confident and happy!
Capturing the Magic on Digital and Film
What made this elopement even more special was the combination of digital and film photography.
- Digital Photography: Using my trusty Canon R6 Mark ii, I captured the crisp details of the couple’s emotional moments, the textures of the waterfall, and the vibrant greenery of the Gorge. The ability to shoot quickly and adapt to the changing light allowed me to document every fleeting expression and gesture.
- Film Photography: Film added a layer of timelessness to the day. The soft, grainy textures and warm tones brought an ethereal quality to the images, evoking a sense of nostalgia. Shooting on film required patience and intention, which mirrored the couple’s deliberate choice to elope in such a meaningful place. For this elopement I choose to shoot a mix of 35mm (color) and medium format (black and white) film.
The blend of these two mediums created a gallery that felt both modern and classic, perfectly reflecting the couple’s personalities.
Tips for Planning a Waterfall Elopement in the Columbia River Gorge
If you’re considering a waterfall elopement, here are a few tips to make your day unforgettable:
- Choose the Right Time: Early mornings or weekdays are ideal for avoiding crowds and catching the softest light.
- Dress for the Environment: Flowy gowns and sturdy hiking boots make a great combo. As do comfortable pants and breathable shirts. Don’t forget a jacket or shawl for cooler temperatures!
- Prepare for the Elements: Bring waterproof gear and extra layers for yourself. Waterfalls create a lot of mist, are generally cold, and weather can change quickly in the Gorge. I always like to bring an extra change of clothes for after our session too, so that the drive home is comfortable.
- Consider Permits: Check if your chosen location requires a permit for elopements or photography.
- Hire an Experienced Photographer: A photographer familiar with the Gorge can help you find hidden gems and capture your day authentically. (I just so happen to be one!)
Why Elopements in Nature Are So Special
Elopements strip away the distractions of traditional weddings, allowing couples to focus on what truly matters: their love and commitment to each other. Being surrounded by nature amplifies this intimacy. The Columbia River Gorge, with its breathtaking landscapes and tranquil ambiance, offers the perfect canvas for such meaningful moments.
